Matrei is a very charming small authentic village located in the National Park Hohe Tauern in Austria. In case you are going on a skiing holiday with the family or just want to go to a more quiet place, then Matrei is perfect for you! In addition, the larger village Lienz is not far away if you want to have more restaurants, bars and cafés or just stroll around town.

In Matrei there are 110 km of and 16 ski lifts. This ski resort is known for good snow conditions so you can usually ski throughout the winter without any problems.

Skiing in Matrei

From the valley, take the gondola Goldried which should be within walking distance of your accommodation. Once you get off the gondola, the ski area opens up.

If you are a beginner or with children you can go straight to the children’s area. You can also find the fun park here. If you are more experienced skier, we suggest to have a go at the 12 kilometer long ski slope that starts from the Cimaross peak.

It is also possible to gain access to a major ski area in East Tyrol and Carinthia. The area includes eight different ski areas and this gives you access to 400 km of slopes at 630-3,122 m altitude.

There are also cross-country ski tracks available, however not as many as in some other ski resorts.

Activities in Matrei

Apart from skiing there are tons of other fun activities in Matrei. Some examples are curling, snowshoe hikes, horse sleigh rides. You can also head of on skis basically anywhere in case you have a bit wider cross-country skis that will support you even in case of deep snow.

In case you would like to just take it easy, there are beauty salons and massage parlors available.

Book ski holiday to Matrei

The easiest way of reaching Matrei is to buy a flight ticket to Salzburg or Innsbruck. Both are located about 60 kilometers away. You will need your own car to reach Matrei. Another option would possibly be Munich but it is over 200 kilometers from the airport to the ski resort.
