Skiing After a Serious Injury

While skiing is easily one of the most amazing sports, there's little doubt that it can be a bit hard on the body at times, and whether you experience injury on the slopes or at home, taking to the snow again after injury can be a daunting task. These tips may help make your next ski holiday a success, despite your previous injury.
  • Make sure you're fit. Before you ever head back to the slopes again, you'll want an amazing level of fitness. Skiing takes some serious work, and all of your muscles will be involved, so you'll need to be in great shape before you even leave.
  • Consider protective gear. Depending on the type of injury you've recently suffered, there may be a brace or other type of gear designed to help prevent injury in the future. Talk with your doctor or physical therapist about what's available in your specific case, then consider the investment. It could keep the injury from occurring again whilst you're on holiday.
  • Become a better skier. If you haven't been skiing long, you're far more likely to sustain an injury. Better technique can often result in injury prevention, so consider working with a ski coach or knowledgeable professional both before you leave and while you're on holiday to help hone your skills and keep injuries at bay.
  • Check your equipment. Improperly adjusted bindings are a leading cause of knee injury on the slopes. Poorly maintained skis can create a similar problem. Take a solid look at your equipment before you leave the rental shop. If you own your equipment, make certain a pro looks at it before you go out to the slopes.
  • Don't suffer! If you think you've experienced a reinjury or a brand new one, the single best thing you can do is seek medical attention immediately. Suffering through the pain is only going to make things worse.
